Qatar and China’s Aviation Ties Grow with New Doha-Shenzhen Route

Qatar has expanded its flight connections to China through Hamad International Airport (DOH), bringing increased connectivity to the Qatar-China route network. Shenzhen Airlines recently inaugurated its new direct Doha-Shenzhen route on October 29, 2024, reflecting Qatar’s deepening relationship with China and addressing the growing travel demand between these two regions. Operating three times weekly, this new route not only marks Shenzhen Airlines’ entry into the Middle Eastern market but also becomes Hamad International Airport’s ninth Chinese destination, a significant milestone for aviation in both nations.

Enhanced Air Connectivity Drives Strategic Growth

Scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, the Doha-Shenzhen route features Shenzhen Airlines’ Airbus A330-300 aircraft, configured with 300 seats across business, premium economy, and economy classes. With 16 lie-flat business seats, 23 premium economy seats, and 261 economy seats, the airline caters to a diverse range of passenger preferences, enhancing the travel experience on this route.

The inaugural event at Hamad International Airport saw high-ranking Qatari and Chinese dignitaries, including the Chinese Ambassador to Qatar and Shenzhen Airlines’ Vice President, underscoring the partnership’s importance and commitment to improved travel and trade connectivity.

Strengthening the Qatar-China Connection

As a rapidly expanding tech and commercial hub, Shenzhen’s new link with Doha is poised to boost tourism and business in both countries. The added route provides Chinese travelers with more options while supporting regional economic growth in tourism and trade sectors.

Meeting Qatar-China Market Demand

Hamad Ali Al Khater, Chief Operating Officer of Hamad International Airport, highlighted the rapid rise in the Qatar-China air travel market, with passenger numbers doubling in recent years. The new route supports Qatar’s mission to expand international air access, aligning with Hamad International Airport’s vision to enhance connectivity for travelers and boost economic development through tourism and business.

Part of Qatar’s broader aviation strategy, this increase in flight connections to China underscores the country’s goal of establishing itself as a key global travel hub linking East and West. Al Khater expressed optimism for the long-term relationship with Shenzhen Airlines, emphasizing the positive economic benefits for Qatar.

Shenzhen Airlines’ International Expansion

Founded in 1992, Shenzhen Airlines has built a fleet of over 200 aircraft, operating across East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Europe. A Star Alliance member since 2012, the airline continues to expand its global footprint, with the Doha route representing a critical link between China and the Middle East. By offering its passengers increased connectivity, Shenzhen Airlines is advancing its commitment to providing seamless travel experiences and strengthening its position in international aviation.

Travel and Connectivity Implications

This new Doha-Shenzhen route not only increases travel choices for passengers but also enhances economic and cultural exchanges between Qatar and China. Strengthening these ties benefits tourism, business, and trade sectors, with Hamad International Airport emerging as a vital transit point for Chinese travelers en route to Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Aligning with Qatar’s vision of becoming a central global travel hub, Hamad International Airport continues to earn recognition for its exceptional service quality, connectivity, and passenger experience. For the travel industry, Shenzhen Airlines’ new route sets a strong example for other airlines eyeing Middle Eastern expansions, as demand for China-Gulf travel continues to climb.
