Morocco is redefining surf tourism with sustainable practices, stunning coastlines, and a commitment to community empowerment, inspiring surf travelers worldwide.

Morocco is rapidly establishing itself as a top contender in surf tourism, leveraging its expansive coastline and abundant sunshine nearly all year to develop a vibrant, eco-conscious surf destination. Focused on mindful growth, the Moroccan surf community draws valuable lessons from iconic locations like Bali, aiming to protect its natural landscapes and uplift local communities.

Forecasts from the Moroccan government predict a substantial GDP increase of 4.6% by 2025, up from a projected 3.3% in 2024. This optimistic outlook stems from strategic investments across vital sectors beyond agriculture, including tourism, technology, and renewable energy. Morocco’s comprehensive economic strategy underscores its dedication to sustainable development, particularly within global tourism and sports, with surf tourism playing a significant role.

The 2024 Taghazout Surf Expo highlights Morocco’s surf industry ambitions, uniting key organizations like the Souss Massa Regional Council, the Moroccan National Tourism Office, the Agadir Regional Tourism Council, and the Royal Moroccan Surfing Federation. Featuring more than 80 exhibitors and attracting an impressive 40,000 visitors, the expo fosters valuable alliances and enhances Morocco’s standing as a leading surf destination.

Since 2010, Moroccan surf culture has flourished, further accelerated by a surge in local surfers during the pandemic. National champions like Ramzi Boukhiam and Othmane Choufani have spotlighted Morocco on the global stage, motivating a fresh wave of surfers throughout the country.

With 3,500 kilometers of coastline and ideal surf conditions, Morocco is a premier surf locale. However, organizers of the Taghazout Surf Expo, guided by forward-thinking leaders like Bella, are intent on avoiding environmental challenges that other surf destinations have faced. Through collaboration with the Moroccan government, the expo team is raising crucial awareness about conserving Morocco’s untouched surf spots. Joint efforts with local authorities have safeguarded notable locations like Anchor Point and Boilers from potentially disruptive development.

Solidifying its place on the global surf map, the Taghazout Surf Expo garners international recognition, drawing top surf brands like Firewire, Ocean & Earth, Soöruz, and O’Neil. More than a celebration of Moroccan surf culture, the event exemplifies sustainable tourism, setting a benchmark within the international surf community.
