The WTM Global Travel Report reveals the Middle East as a booming tourism hub, with visitor numbers doubling post-pandemic, driven by regional events and investments.

At WTM London 2024, the Global Travel Report, a collaborative effort by WTM and Oxford Economics, underscored the Middle East as one of the world’s fastest-expanding tourism regions, experiencing a remarkable doubling of international visitor numbers over the past five years.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations are at the helm of this growth, spurred by robust travel within the GCC and improved regional connectivity.

The report emphasizes that GCC nations have become not only popular destinations but also significant sources of travelers.

Intra-GCC travel has grown considerably, with residents increasingly crossing borders within the region, resembling domestic travel demand seen in other parts of the world. Dave Goodger, Managing Director of EMEA at Tourism Economics, stated, “We’re seeing substantial improvements in relationships among GCC countries, leading to a marked increase in cross-border travel within the region.”

Notable events such as Qatar’s FIFA World Cup and Dubai’s Expo 2020 have elevated the region’s profile, attracting visitors from within the Middle East and beyond.

Facilitated visa policies, streamlined border procedures, and enhanced air links are further supporting this tourism surge.

While optimistic, the report notes the region’s exposure to geopolitical uncertainties. “The Middle East faces a high degree of unpredictability due to ongoing conflicts and instability,” said Goodger, while adding that the report’s forecasts assume a gradual resolution of these tensions over time without significant escalation.

On a global scale, the report shows international tourism achieving new records, with projected overnight arrivals reaching 1.5 billion by the end of 2024. This milestone comes after a period of “revenge travel,” where pent-up demand post-pandemic drove tourism rebounds in 2022 and 2023. Now, 2024 is set to be a year of strong growth. “We’re entering a new phase—the growth phase,” noted Goodger. “2024 will set a new benchmark, surpassing pre-pandemic records.”

This growing global appeal is evident as the Middle East solidifies its position as a tourism hub, with nations like Saudi Arabia and the UAE investing significantly in tourism infrastructure and destination enhancements.

China and India are forecasted to be pivotal in future global tourism growth, including in the Middle East. With China’s economy stabilizing and its middle class expanding, outbound travel is projected to rise by 80% by 2030.

Similarly, India’s outbound travel is expected to double in the same period, marking both nations as major players in worldwide tourism expansion.

The report also notes a deceleration in domestic travel, which spiked during the pandemic. International travel, however, is anticipated to grow by 12% in the coming years, while domestic travel is projected to see a modest 3% rise. Goodger highlighted that travelers are now opting for fewer trips but with extended stays and higher spending, aligning with trends toward sustainable, high-quality travel.

With international tourism reaching new heights, the Middle East leads in growth, benefiting from strengthened regional connections, premier events, and the potential of an expanding global market.
