AirAsia is moving forward with plans to turn Kuala Lumpur International Airport into a global transit hub, following the approval of its aviation division sale.

AirAsia is taking bold steps to elevate Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) into a major global aviation hub, with a focus on enhancing ASEAN connectivity and positioning the region as a top transit destination, on par with Dubai. This strategic move comes on the heels of overwhelming support from Capital A Berhad’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM), where shareholders gave the green light to the sale of its aviation division to AirAsia X Berhad. This approval represents a key milestone in Capital A’s growth strategy.

At the EGM on October 14, a notable 99.97% of Capital A shareholders voted in favor of the disposal plan, which will pave the way for Capital A’s restructuring and its anticipated exit from PN17 status. The approval allows Capital A to sharpen its focus on four main pillars: Capital A Aviation Services (CAPAS), MOVE Digital, Teleport, and the AirAsia brand company. This transition also aims to enhance the synergy between the airline’s short-haul and long-haul operations, optimizing growth potential and increasing returns for its shareholders. The final step will come after shareholder approval from AirAsia X, expected on October 16, solidifying both companies’ plans to form a unified airline group by the end of the year.

YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport Malaysia commended both parties on the recognition: “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to AirAsia and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) for their remarkable contributions in positioning Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) as a global aviation megahub. Being recognised as the second most connected airport in the world by OAG speaks volumes about the extensive connectivity AirAsia provides in the region, supported by the robust infrastructure of MAHB. The resilience, innovation, and collaboration between both parties have been instrumental in driving this success. The government is proud to witness KLIA’s transformation, which reinforces Malaysia’s status as a key player in global air travel

As part of its ambitious growth plan, AirAsia aims to establish Kuala Lumpur as the world’s leading low-cost carrier hub, with Malaysia positioned as a major player in budget travel by 2025. The airline is expanding its fleet from 63 to 76 aircraft, a 21% increase, while boosting its daily flights from 230 to 258, reflecting a 12% rise. Additionally, AirAsia is set to introduce 8 new routes in 2025, increasing its destinations from 98 to 106, further meeting the rising travel demand across established and emerging markets in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. This expansion will enhance AirAsia’s connectivity, benefiting both passengers and businesses.

Beyond fleet expansion, AirAsia plans to solidify its footprint in key markets while seeking opportunities in secondary airports across Asia by 2025. Between 2026 and 2027, the airline intends to prioritize growth in high-demand markets in the Pacific and East Asia, along with targeted expansion in Africa. By 2028, AirAsia will strengthen its presence in the Middle East, with ambitions to explore markets in Europe and North America by 2030, laying the groundwork for a global network that caters to a wide range of travel needs.

Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to AirAsia Aviation Group, stated: “The EGM results are a monumental step toward creating a powerful aviation group and transforming KLIA into the world’s leading aviation megahub. Our Allstars have shown resilience, innovation, and fierce determination through the challenges of the last five years. We’ve survived one of the most difficult periods in aviation history, and now we’re coming out stronger than ever.

“I would also like to express our gratitude to Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) for their long-standing friendship and partnership, which has been instrumental in our journey to grow KLIA into a world-class aviation hub. With the consolidation of our aviation businesses and a stronger focus on aviation services, we are unlocking massive growth opportunities and ensuring that Asean becomes the next Dubai in global air travel.”

The 2024 OAG Megahubs Index highlights KLIA as the second most connected airport worldwide, just behind London Heathrow. With more than 14,500 potential low-cost connections spanning 137 destinations, much of KLIA’s connectivity stems from AirAsia’s extensive route network. Together, AirAsia and AirAsia X operate 43% of all flights at KLIA, accounting for 74% of the airport’s low-cost carrier capacity, giving Kuala Lumpur a significant advantage over other regional airports like Singapore and Bangkok.

Mayur Patel, Head of Asia at OAG Aviation, congratulated AirAsia for its dominant role at KLIA and praised Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) for being recognized as a global leader. He emphasized the symbiotic relationship between airlines and airports, noting that AirAsia’s strategic growth plans will further solidify KLIA’s role as a major aviation hub, elevating ASEAN as a prominent global transit point.

Mayur Patel, Head of Asia at OAG Aviation said, “Congratulations to AirAsia for being a dominant carrier at KLIA and to MAHB for being recognised among the world’s top MegaHubs. The relationship between an airline and airports is symbiotic, and AirAsia’s strategic growth plan positions it well to support the airport’s role as a leading aviation hub, and elevate Asean as a global transit point.”

With Capital A’s restructuring underway, AirAsia Group is now in a stronger position to streamline its operations and prioritize sustainable growth in the aviation sector. By merging short-haul and long-haul services, the unified AirAsia Group is well-positioned to increase operational efficiency and profitability, solidifying Kuala Lumpur and the ASEAN region as key players in the global aviation arena.
