Expedia’s Unpack ’25 reveals powerful travel trends for 2025, highlighting off-season savings in Australia, media-driven travel choices, and Dubai’s luxury hotel appeal.
Expedia Group, a global leader in travel technology, has released its annual travel forecast for 2025, titled Unpack ’25, shedding light on crucial trends set to shape the travel landscape in the coming year. Social media platforms, popular TV shows, and movies are predicted to play a bigger role in travel choices, with two-thirds of global travelers now being influenced by entertainment sources like The Real Housewives of Dubai, Emily in Paris, and White Lotus. This marks a notable 16% rise from the previous year.
The report, which draws from insights from 25,000 travelers across 19 countries, highlights several important trends for 2025. One standout finding is that 40% of Australians plan to travel during off-peak seasons to save on costs and avoid crowds. Destinations such as Darwin and the Snowy Mountains are experiencing significant discounts during the off-season, with prices dropping by as much as 122% and 151%, respectively.
Rising Interest in Lesser-Known Destinations
A growing number of travelers are expressing interest in quieter, less-traveled destinations, with 63% planning to steer clear of traditional tourist hotspots. This shift is driven by both financial considerations and the desire for more unique, personalized experiences. According to Expedia’s findings, travelers are also prioritizing accommodations that offer superior dining experiences. Over half of Australian travelers (63%) now prioritize hotels with standout dining options, while 32% are drawn to properties with seasonal menus.
Culinary and Shopping Trends Gaining Momentum
Beyond accommodation preferences, shopping and food experiences are gaining traction, especially influenced by social media platforms like TikTok. The platform has motivated 39% of travelers to visit local grocery stores and 44% to seek out unique specialty items that aren’t available in their home country. Popular items include Korean skincare products, Japanese sweets, and Costa Rican coffee.
Expedia Group CEO Ariane Gorin noted, “Our Unpack ’25 report allows us to delve into the evolving travel behaviors of consumers and explore how technology is transforming these experiences. The rise of social media and entertainment as influential factors is a clear indicator of the direction the industry is headed.”
Rising Demand for Tranquil Getaways
The demand for peaceful, remote escapes is also on the rise, with 86% of Australians expressing interest in vacations focused on relaxation at tranquil spots such as farmhouses and beach houses. This growing trend reflects the increasing desire to disconnect from daily stresses and immerse in serene natural surroundings.
Australia’s Appeal to Asia’s Growing Middle Class
Further insights from the report indicate that Australia continues to be a top destination for Asia’s expanding middle class, which is projected to reach 3.5 billion people by 2030. Despite inflation concerns, 81% of affluent Asian travelers still prioritize travel, planning to visit an average of four destinations over 10 days on their next international trip. Australia ranks among their favored destinations, with these travelers expected to allocate nearly 25% of their income to travel in the coming year.
Expedia Group’s Chief Commercial Officer Greg Schulze highlighted the significance of this growth, stating, “The rapid expansion of the Asian middle class is reshaping the global travel landscape. With our cutting-edge technology and global network, we are uniquely positioned to support partners in reaching these travelers at every step of their journey, from inspiration to booking.”
