A devastating train crash in southern Egypt has left one person dead and over a dozen injured, marking the second railway disaster in the country within a month.

A locomotive struck the rear end of a Cairo-bound passenger train in southern Egypt on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least one person and injuring several others, as reported by officials. This tragic event is the second train accident to occur in Egypt within a month.

The incident took place in Minya province, approximately 270 kilometers (168 miles) south of Cairo. The railway authority issued a statement explaining that the force of the collision caused two train carriages to plunge into a nearby watercourse. The specific cause of the accident is currently under investigation, the statement added.

Footage aired by local media showed the aftermath, with the two train cars partially submerged in the water, highlighting the hazardous conditions passengers endure when traveling on Egypt’s railway network.

In a separate statement, the Health Ministry confirmed the fatality and reported that 21 individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. Of those injured, 19 were later released after receiving appropriate medical care.

Train accidents, including derailments and collisions, have become increasingly common in Egypt, where the outdated railway infrastructure has suffered from years of neglect and poor management. This latest collision follows another in September, where two passenger trains crashed in the Nile Delta, claiming the lives of at least three people.

Egyptian authorities have admitted to the deteriorating state of the rail system and have initiated plans for an overhaul. In 2018, President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi revealed that an investment of 250 billion Egyptian pounds, approximately $8.13 billion, would be required to restore and modernize the country’s deteriorating railway infrastructure.Despite these efforts, accidents persist, raising concerns about the safety and efficiency of Egypt’s rail services.

As the investigation into the Minya crash continues, officials are working to uncover the exact factors that led to this fatal incident. Meanwhile, there is growing public demand for the government to expedite the implementation of railway improvements to prevent further tragedies.
